SHANNON LEWIS
CERAMICIST
Bio
Shannon Lewis is a Blue Mountains–based ceramicist whose practice centres on the creation of functional and sculptural stoneware objects for everyday use. Since beginning her work with clay in 2016, she has developed a distinctive approach that refines traditional ceramic forms through a contemporary lens.
Her work spans tableware, homewares, and sculptural pieces, with experience ranging from individual studio production to commissioned projects for designers, restaurants, and private collectors. Shannon works across wheel throwing and hand-building techniques, developing her own glazes to achieve subtle, tactile surfaces.
Previously associated with the Clay Cartel studio in Marrickville, she maintains connections to both the Sydney and Blue Mountains ceramics communities. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, including Cowboy Ceramics in Katoomba and Wayward at M2 Gallery, and has been featured within the Craft NSW collection.
Drawing on the natural environments that surround her—from the bushland and mountains of the Blue Mountains to the textures and tones of the coastline—Shannon’s practice reflects a deep engagement with place and the rhythms of daily life.

Artist Statement
My practice is grounded in the making of objects for everyday rituals—pieces that are used, held, and lived with over time. I am drawn to classic forms and the quiet refinement of functional ceramics, creating work that balances simplicity, utility, and tactile presence.
Surface and glaze play an important role in my work. I am inspired by the colours and textures of the landscapes around me—from the bush and mountains close to home to the coastline and ocean. These influences emerge in soft, layered glazes, subtle tonal variations, and surfaces that invite touch.
I aim to create pieces that feel calm and considered, with a modern, timeless quality. Whether it’s a cup used each morning, a bowl shared at the table, or a vessel holding cuttings from the garden, my work is intended to become part of daily life.
Through the process of making, I celebrate the handmade—embracing variation, materiality, and the connection between maker, object, and user. My intention is to create work that brings a sense of ease and quiet pleasure, now and into the future.
