Renata Commisso is a dynamic dancer and choreographer based in the Blue Mountains, whose work captivates audiences with its blend of technical precision, emotional depth, and creative innovation. With a career spanning over two decades, Renata has become a prominent figure in the regional arts scene, contributing significantly to the local and broader Australian dance community.

Artistic Journey and Education Renata's passion for dance began in her early childhood, training in classical ballet before expanding her repertoire to include contemporary dance, jazz, and improvisational movement. She honed her craft at the prestigious National College of Dance, earning a Diploma in Dance Performance, followed by advanced studies in choreography at the Victorian College of the Arts. Her education provided a solid foundation for her distinctive choreographic voice, characterized by a seamless fusion of styles and a focus on storytelling through movement.

Performance Career Renata has performed with several renowned dance companies, including Sydney Dance Company and Chunky Move, where she gained acclaim for her commanding stage presence and expressive range. Her solo works have been showcased at major festivals such as the Sydney Festival and the Melbourne Fringe Festival, earning accolades for their originality and emotional resonance.

 

Choreographic Work As a choreographer, Renata has created works for stage, film, and site-specific performances. Her choreography often explores themes of identity, connection, and resilience, drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes of the Blue Mountains. Notable works include Eucalypt Dreams (2018), a site-specific performance in the Blue Mountains National Park, and Threads of Memory (2021), a contemporary piece exploring intergenerational stories of migration and belonging.

Community Engagement Deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of artists, Renata is a dedicated teacher and mentor. She runs dance workshops and masterclasses across the Blue Mountains, fostering creativity and confidence in young dancers. Her community projects, such as the annual Dance Across the Mountains initiative, bring people of all ages together to celebrate the joy of movement.

Current Projects Renata is currently working on a new multi-disciplinary project, Pulse of the Earth, which combines dance, live music, and visual projections to explore the interconnectedness of humans and nature. This ambitious work is set to premiere at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in mid-2025.
