NATALIE TOTTERDELL

CERAMICIST

Bio

Natalie Anna Totterdell is an emerging ceramic artist based in the Blue Mountains, whose practice centres on functional pottery informed by a deep connection to the natural world. With approximately six years of experience working in clay, she has developed a self-directed practice grounded in experimentation, observation, and an evolving relationship with her materials.

Natalie’s creative foundation is closely linked to her early experiences bushwalking through the Blue Mountains, where a strong appreciation for the environment—particularly birdlife—first took shape. This interest led her to study Environmental Science at Macquarie University and to spend extended periods living and working in some of Australia’s most distinctive landscapes, including Uluru, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, and the Far South Coast of New South Wales.

These experiences continue to inform her work, with natural forms, textures, and ecological awareness reflected in her designs. Working without formal training in ceramics, Natalie has built her practice through hands-on exploration and a commitment to developing her own visual language within the medium.

Artist Statement

My work is an ongoing reflection of my connection to the natural environments I have lived in and experienced. From the Blue Mountains to the Northern Territory and the Far South Coast, these landscapes have shaped the way I see, think, and create.

I primarily make functional pieces—objects intended for everyday use—but I approach them as quiet expressions of place. Subtle textures, forms, and surface details often reference elements of the natural world, particularly birds and the patterns found in the environment.

Without formal training in ceramics, my practice has developed through experimentation and curiosity. Each piece is part of a learning process, where ideas evolve over time and through making.

I am interested in creating work that feels grounded and connected—pieces that carry something of the landscapes that inspire them, and that can be used and appreciated in daily life.
