JILLIAN CULEY & CAROLYN DANCE

Branching Out is a collaboration between sister’s Jillian Culey and Carolyn Dance. It is devoted to handmade, fair trade and sustainable creations.

Jillian works predominantly with locally harvested fibres. She explores and experiments with traditional basketry techniques including twining, string making and ribbed work. For Jillian, weaving is an opportunity to explore the connection between mathematical patterns and nature and her woven pieces take their inspiration from that connection.

Carolyn’s home is nestled in the bush in the Blue Mountains. The surrounding flora and fauna inspires and informs her creative practice. Carolyn’s weaving is a meditative process where the purposeful, slow and rhythmic movements help to transform natural materials into functional baskets and unique pieces.

We run a variety of weaving workshops for children, adults, individuals and groups. Weaving workshops include coiling, random and twining techniques, garden features and more.
The workshops are great activities for school groups, professional development for art teachers, parent groups, church groups, team building activities and more.

Upcoming Show

Ribbed Basket or Platter

In this workshop you will use natural fibres, including vines, rushes and leaves to create a a one of a kind basket or centre piece platter. Participants will learn a number of fundamental basketry techniques included randing and rib construction. Included in the workshop will be information on how to harvest and prepare natural materials for basket weaving.

Date: Sunday 12th March

Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm

Location: Gang Gang Gallery, Lithgow

Cost: $150 per person (includes all materials and morning tea).
