Biography

Debbie Dunn is a Blue Mountains ceramic artist who has called the Mountains home for 33 years. Living surrounded by the region's distinctive landscape has provided an ongoing source of inspiration and continues to influence her approach to pottery.

What began as a hobby has developed into a deeply rewarding creative journey. Over time, Debbie has refined her skills through the guidance and knowledge of accomplished potters and developed a diverse approach to working with clay.

Her practice encompasses both functional ceramics for everyday living and larger sculptural forms. She works across a range of techniques, including wheel throwing, top-hatting, coiling and hand building, allowing her to explore different possibilities of form and construction.

Debbie enjoys experimenting with different clay bodies and glazes, as well as the distinctive and often unpredictable results produced by alternative firing processes. In particular, raku and obvara firing play an important role in her practice, introducing an element of chance and allowing fire to contribute directly to the character of each piece.

Her work is characterised by an appreciation for earthy textures, organic surfaces and tactile forms. Whether creating an object intended for everyday use or a larger sculptural piece, Debbie seeks to create ceramics that have warmth, purpose and a sense of connection.

As a member of the Blue Mountains Clay Collective, Debbie is part of the region's active community of ceramic artists and makers.

Her practice continues to evolve through experimentation, learning and a willingness to follow wherever the ancient craft of working with clay may lead.
