Blue Mountains illustrator Bill Hope’s show of pencil and watercolours, titled ‘Going Somewhere’ is a collection of whimsical, intimate pieces where an assortment of human like characters each embark on their own journey to parts unknown.
It’s uplifting ….even cheerful.
Bill is an emerging young talent from Sydney, having established himself in the commercial illustration industry.
Each artwork is a story inspired by Bill’s love for storytelling and imaginative escapism with different characters going on journeys in cars, trains or hot air balloons.
He also loves drawing for children’s books and has created illustrations for The Land of Lost Things, by Australian author Andy Griffiths, a firm favourite with the under tens.
This, Bill describes as a dream project.
“Andy is really passionate about getting kids to read. The book has allowed me to do the type of illustrations I’ve always wanted to do,” he said.
Released in Australia this year, the book will be translated into 16 languages and released in the UK, USA and Italy in coming months
The Lost Bear exhibition caps off a very busy 2024 for Bill.
In March, he unveiled his first public exhibition titled ‘Living Room’ at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.
Since graduating in 2012 from UNSW Art and Design, he has been represented by the best illustration agencies in Australia, working across a range of mediums.
His work combines a classic aesthetic with a vibrant use of modern illustration and design techniques.
While his subjects can be fantastical and whimsical in nature they are grounded in investigations into modern life and its absurdities.
Whether in digital prints or on paper, the drawn line remains his focus.
His line intricately blends humour and pathos, crafting elaborate compositions which capture the essence of his subject.
